Major Engine Components – An Overview
The engine is the heart of your car or truck, but instead of pumping blood, the
engine pumps air and fuel. The engine’s main function is to convert air
and fuel into rotary motion so it can drive the wheels of the car. How does it
do that?
Pistons: |
Most common engines have 4, 6 or 8 pistons which move up and down in the cylinders.
On the upper side of the piston is the combustion chamber where the fuel (gasoline)
and air mix before being ignited. On the other side is the crankcase, which is
full of oil. Pistons have rings which serve to keep the oil out of the combustion
chamber and the fuel (gasoline) and air out of the oil. Pistons are made from
lightweight aluminum alloy and are designed to float in the cylinder without contacting
the cylinder walls. They float on a thin layer of oil which is below the rings.
If the rings fail, oil can leak into the combustion chamber and you will see grey
smoke coming from the exhaust. If the rings wear or lose oil to the engine, the
pistons can score the cylinder walls, damaging the engine and requiring rebuilding
or replacing the engine. |
| Crankshaft:
|
The crankshaft is connected to the pistons
by way of a connecting rod. As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, it
rotates the crankshaft and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion. |
| Valvetrain: |
The valvetrain consists of valves, rocker
arms, pushrods, lifters, and the camshaft. The valvetrain’s only job is
that of a traffic cop. It lets air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper
time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft which is synchronized to the crankshaft
by a chain or belt. |
| Intake
Manifold: |
The intake manifold is one of the more
crucial parts of the engine. The intake manifold supplies energy required by other
components of the car to function properly. This engine part consists of elongated
and large aluminum or steel hollow ways that transport fuel and air to the carburetor
for combustion. The main function of the intake manifold is the equal distribution
of the air / fuel mixture (or the combustion mixture) to the cylinders in order
to improve the efficiency of the engine. The car engine sometimes experiences
problems due to clogged cables and pipes. This can be a result of the formation
of the debris in the engine parts which may require cleaning. |
| Electric
Fuel Pump: |
The objective of a fuel pump is to provide
pressurized fuel to a car engine. In old cars, there were diaphragm driven mechanical
fuel pumps, which have now been replaced with electronic ones. During every engine
cycle, fuel needs to be supplied at high pressure to the fuel injectors which
spray it into the engine confines for combustion to occur. As you turn on the
ignition of your car, the fuel pump relay powers up the fuel pump. So the prime
function of the fuel pump is to draw fuel from the fuel tank and supply it to
the engine. |
These are only some of the major components of your vehicle’s
engine. Your car or truck has many components that must function together for
your vehicle to run properly. When one or more of these components stops working
as it should, your engine should be inspected for needed repair. Don’t wait
for your car to fix itself – the problem will only get worse!
If your vehicle is running rough, stalling, not starting properly, stopping while
driving, or the check engine light is on and the car is not running right –
these are signs you should get the engine inspected and possibly repaired. Bring
your car or truck to Alabama Auto Repair where our technicians can perform all
your engine services – Major and Minor Repairs and Preventive Services!
